U.S. President Trump told the European Union that if the EU imposes taxes on American whiskey, the U.S. will also impose a 200% high tariff on European alcoholic beverages.
The cause of the issue is that the U.S. first imposed a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum products from many countries. To retaliate, the EU decided to impose a 50% tariff on American whiskey starting April 1.
Trump stated on social media that if the EU really raises taxes, the U.S. will escalate the trade war by imposing even higher tariffs on wine, champagne, and other alcoholic products from France and other EU countries.
The EU also said their countermeasures include not only steel and aluminum but also textiles, home appliances, and agricultural products.
However, the EU expressed hope to resolve the issue through negotiations and does not want high tariffs.
American whiskey producers also hope Trump can reach an agreement with the EU to return to a tariff-free state, which would be better for everyone.
