Why Some People Think Cantonese Is More Authentic Than Mandarin
China has many languages and dialects, not just Mandarin.
After 1912, Mandarin became the official language of China.
Many people in Guangdong feel that Cantonese is more authentic than Mandarin because many Chinese revolutionaries came from Guangdong, such as Sun Yat-sen.
Cantonese has also been used for a long time in history; some say Cantonese is very similar to the ancient Chinese spoken during the Tang Dynasty.
Many ancient poems sound more rhymed when read in Cantonese.
Later, the government required schools and workplaces to use more Mandarin, so the use of Cantonese decreased in many places.
In Hong Kong, many schools also started teaching Chinese in Mandarin, but some people feel this will cause Cantonese to slowly disappear.
Now, Mandarin is becoming more important in China and Hong Kong, but many people still love their own dialects.
