The U.S. House of Representatives recently passed a bill that prohibits the U.S. Department of Defense from creating or displaying maps that depict Taiwan as part of China.
The bill also states that islands such as Kinmen, Matsu, Penghu, Green Island, and Orchid Island cannot be shown as part of China.
The lawmaker who proposed this bill said that Taiwan has its own leaders, military, and foreign policy, and is a democratic and independent place.
Although the U.S. government has a "One China Policy," this bill requires the Defense Department's maps to reflect that Taiwan and China are separate places.
The bill also includes $500 million to help Taiwan strengthen its security, such as purchasing new defense equipment and conducting military training.
Now, this bill still needs to be approved by the Senate and finally signed by the President before it can become law.
