A senior US official said at a congressional hearing that the Trump administration wants to establish a stable and constructive relationship with China but also expressed distrust towards Beijing.
He explained that stable relations do not mean complete trust in the other party.
The official mentioned that the US is concerned about China exporting many cheap products, such as mobile phones, communication equipment, and electric vehicles, which affect markets in Europe and Southeast Asia.
He believes China has long-term plans in important technology fields and competes unfairly, so the US must both compete and protect supply chain security to keep American companies competitive.
A lawmaker said this is not just ordinary competition but facing an important opponent.
The official also said the US economy is still strong, with many large companies in the world based in the US, but it cannot relax.
He also stated that Trump and Xi Jinping maintain communication, but the US will put its own interests first.
