A Chinese citizen named Lin Weiqiang, living in New York, USA, was sentenced by an American judge to two years in prison and fined $2,339 for smuggling turtles and venomous snakes.
Between 2023 and 2024, Lin Weiqiang packed about 850 turtles and some venomous snakes into parcels and sent them to Hong Kong.
He labeled the parcels as "plastic animal toys," but they actually contained live animals.
Some of these turtles and snakes are very rare, and some are poisonous.
US customs discovered these animals during inspection and stopped them.
Lin Weiqiang's actions violated US laws.
Later, the intercepted turtles were sent to a zoo, where they are used to protect and breed the species.
US authorities are continuing to investigate similar smuggling cases.
