A young African American labor activist in Florida won the Democratic primary for the Senate.
She defeated a better-known, better-funded moderate opponent and will next compete against the Republican candidate.
Her campaign relied mainly on grassroots support: many volunteers went door to door to talk with residents, while ordinary supporters helped through small donations.
She supports free health care and child care for everyone, higher taxes on billionaires, a higher minimum wage, and measures to limit rent increases and stop the eviction of residents who cannot afford to pay rent.
She has long been involved in union and community work. She also helped establish an open-air market where small businesses sell healthy food, and opened a bookstore café that provides space for local groups to hold events and for children and students to learn about African American history and culture.
