Recently, Chinese media reported some new changes in Japan’s tourism industry.
According to the data, in the first half of 2026, the number of foreign visitors traveling to Japan fell by 2% compared with the same period last year.
This was the first decline since the pandemic.
Among them, the number of Chinese visitors decreased particularly noticeably.
Because of the decrease in Chinese visitors, many flights between China and Japan were canceled, and the revenues of some Japanese hotels were also affected.
Chinese media analyzed that although the number of visitors from Europe and the United States is increasing, this is mainly because the depreciation of the yen makes shopping in Japan relatively inexpensive.
If exchange rates change in the future, the number of visitors from Europe and the United States may also decrease accordingly.
Regarding the reasons for the decline in Chinese visitors, Chinese media believe that it is related not only to economic issues but also to the political relationship between the two countries.
The reports pointed out that some recent positions and remarks by the Japanese government on historical issues and the Taiwan issue have affected China-Japan relations.
This has caused many Chinese tourists to lose interest in traveling to Japan.
For tourists, their feelings toward and favorable impression of a destination country are also important factors in deciding where to travel.
The Japanese government previously set a major goal: to attract 60 million foreign visitors every year by 2030.
China has always been a very important source market for Japan’s tourism industry.
In the future, how changes in relations between the two countries will affect Japan’s tourism industry remains to be observed.
