U.S. President Trump said he may speak with Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te and will soon decide on a new arms sale to Taiwan.
He said the United States understands the current situation and will also handle the Taiwan issue.
Lai Ching-te responded that if he has the chance to speak with Trump, he will share what people in Taiwan think.
He will tell Trump that Taiwan hopes to maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and that the Taiwanese people want to live in democracy and freedom; this should not be seen as provocation.
Lai Ching-te also said that China’s continued military buildup and military exercises are making the region more tense, and that China is the side undermining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
Because security pressure is growing, Taiwan will increase its defense budget and also hopes to continue buying weapons from the United States.
Lai Ching-te stressed that Taiwan’s future should be decided by the people of Taiwan, and no country has the right to annex Taiwan.
