Australian police recently arrested a Chinese citizen.
She is accused of secretly collecting information about a Buddhist organization in Canberra for the Chinese police.
The police said the woman is a permanent resident of Australia.
She is charged with 'reckless foreign interference' and could face a long prison sentence if found guilty.
Police found electronic devices and other items in her home and are now examining them.
Australian police said this is the third time since new laws were introduced in 2018 that someone has been charged with foreign interference.
This is also the first time a foreign citizen has been charged for interfering in the community.
The police said the investigation is ongoing and more charges may be made.
Police also said that foreign interference affects national security and social unity.
