In the last century, Naivasha in Kenya became famous for greenhouse flower growing. Many companies grew roses there, which also created many jobs.
But later, people found that there were also many problems here, such as poor treatment of workers, heavy water use, environmental damage, and companies paying too little tax.
Now, new changes are coming again.
Microsoft and G42 plan to build a large data center in Olkaria, Naivasha. They will invest a lot of money and say it will promote the digital economy.
However, many Kenyans worry that although data centers use green energy such as geothermal power, they also need large amounts of water and electricity, and may affect land, the environment, and ordinary people's lives.
If large companies pay little tax, or bypass the local power system and labor rules, the benefits for the country and its people may be limited.
Many people worry that the problems seen in the flower industry in the past may happen again today with data centers.
