Russia’s Sakhalin Region hopes to strengthen trade with China. It wants to sell not only raw materials but also develop seafood processing, port transportation, and tourism.
In October 2026, representatives of companies from Heilongjiang visited Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands for an inspection tour.
They are interested in sea urchin and sea cucumber farming and are also considering building a seafood processing plant, but the investment has not yet been finalized.
Sakhalin companies have already received a seaweed powder order worth US$1 million, and the region also plans to export more fish and seafood to China.
Companies from both countries are also studying the possibility of opening a sea route connecting Qingdao, Vladivostok, and Sakhalin.
The region plans to build a large port, which is expected to be completed in 2031.
In addition, Sakhalin has direct flights to Beijing, Harbin, and Shanghai and hopes to attract more Chinese tourists.
However, whether these plans can succeed will depend on funding, transportation, product quality, the number of hotels, and the number of tourists.
