In 2014, many people in Hong Kong took to the streets to participate in the Umbrella Movement.
They hoped Hong Kong could have more democracy and freedom.
Although the movement did not change Hong Kong's political system, it made many Hong Kong people start to care about society and politics.
Five years later, in 2019, more people came out to protest new laws, wanting to protect Hong Kong's freedom.
Later, Hong Kong introduced a new national security law, and many people felt that speaking and expressing themselves became less free.
In schools, teachers were required to teach students to love their country, and some teachers felt this was not very good.
At universities, students dared not discuss sensitive topics, and student unions were also canceled.
Because of these changes, some Hong Kong people chose to leave Hong Kong and live in countries like the UK.
But many people stayed in Hong Kong because of family or work.
Now, there are fewer foreigners in Hong Kong, and more people on the streets speak Mandarin.
Before, Hong Kong was an open and diverse city; now it has become quiet, and protests are rarely seen.
