Japan has released its latest defense white paper.
The white paper says that China is increasingly using military force and pressure to change the situation in surrounding areas, making it Japan's greatest strategic challenge.
Japan is especially concerned about the activities of Chinese warships and military aircraft in the East China Sea, the Sea of Japan, and the western Pacific. It also believes that China's military capabilities are developing rapidly, but that related information is not open enough.
Regarding Taiwan, the white paper says that China has held military exercises around Taiwan many times and may first use coast guard operations, then block Taiwan through methods that do not involve directly starting a war.
Japan is also concerned about China's construction of military facilities in the South China Sea, because important Japanese sea transport routes pass through that area.
In addition, China and Russia often conduct joint air and maritime activities near Japan. Japan believes these actions are meant to demonstrate strength to Japan.
The white paper also views North Korea and Russia as security threats.
In response to these issues, Japan says it will strengthen its own defense capabilities and continue cooperating with the United States and other partners.
China, for its part, criticized the white paper as containing false information and expressed strong dissatisfaction.
