One week before Peru’s presidential runoff, the two candidates, Keiko Fujimori and Roberto Sánchez, took part in a televised debate.
They talked about the issues people care about most, such as public safety, education, healthcare, the economy, jobs, and poverty reduction.
Keiko Fujimori said that Peru now has problems such as poor public security, low wages, and weak healthcare, and that the country needs to restore order.
She also said that her team has experience and can help the country solve its difficulties.
Roberto Sánchez talked about coming from an ordinary family and having served as a minister.
He said that many people do not trust politicians, but everyone should not lose hope.
He hopes to protect democracy together with the people and make the country fairer.
The two also introduced their governing plans.
On security, one side called for stronger border control, while the other side called for reforming the police force.
In education and healthcare, one side proposed developing telemedicine and providing school breakfasts, while the other side proposed increasing scholarships and assigning one counselor to every school.
In the economy, one side hoped to help small businesses with tax cuts and loans, while the other side hoped to increase funding for social programs and promote the country’s industrial development.
At the end, both hoped to win voters’ support and win this presidential runoff.
