U.S. President Trump met with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the White House on Thursday to discuss issues such as trade, energy, and security.
Trump said Japan is an important buyer of U.S. oil and natural gas, and the two sides also talked about the sale of U.S. military equipment to Japan.
Sanae Takaichi expressed her hope to strengthen cooperation between the two countries in economic security, including energy and rare earth minerals.
She also brought a proposal aimed at helping stabilize the global energy market.
Recently, due to tensions involving Iran and the Middle East, the energy market has been very volatile.
Sanae Takaichi criticized Iran for affecting oil transportation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump believes it is appropriate for Japan to participate in protecting the security of this maritime route because much of Japan's imported oil passes through here.
The two countries also hope to continue strengthening their cooperative relationship.
