Recently, the British newspaper Financial Times reported an important detail from the U.S.-China summit talks.

The report said that Chinese President Xi Jinping became very angry, and even raised his voice, when he mentioned Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during the talks.

The U.S.-China talks were held in mid-May.

Several informed sources said Xi became emotional when the discussion turned to Japan’s increase in defense spending.

He harshly criticized Takaichi Sanae for making Japan “remilitarize.”

The report said this was the most tense moment in the two days of talks.

In response to Xi’s criticism, U.S. President Trump defended Japan.

Trump pointed out that, because of threats from North Korea, Japan has had to actively strengthen its defense capabilities.

After the news came out, China’s Foreign Ministry responded at a press conference on May 25.

A spokesperson said the report did not match what China knew and denied the claim.

However, just a few days earlier, on May 20, Xi had indeed publicly criticized Japan when he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, saying he opposed Japan’s move to “restore militarism.”

This report showed that although the leaders of China and the United States sat down to talk, their views still differ greatly when it comes to Japan’s defense issues.
