Aileen Wang, the mayor of Arcadia, California, has resigned.
The U.S. Department of Justice said she was accused of illegally working for the Chinese government in the United States, and she has agreed to plead guilty.
Wang was also a city council member, so after she resigned from the council, she no longer served as mayor.
Court documents say that from late 2020 to 2022, Wang and another man helped spread content supporting the Chinese government in the United States at the request of Chinese officials.
For example, she posted articles prepared by Chinese officials on her own website and sent the links back to them.
On one occasion, she also revised an article as requested and told them how many people had read it.
She admitted that when she did these things, she did not report them under U.S. law or say that the content was related to the Chinese government.
The charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.
Now, the city government of Arcadia will choose a new mayor.
