Recently, some U.S. congressmen introduced a new bill that requires the U.S. Department of Transportation not to use lidar technology from China and other countries.
Lidar is a technology that helps create very detailed maps and is often used in important infrastructure such as airports, ports, railways, and highways.
The congressmen are worried that if lidar made by Chinese companies is used in important places in the U.S., China might get sensitive American data, which could affect U.S. security.
The bill states that the U.S. Department of Transportation cannot cooperate with companies using Chinese lidar, nor can it give money to these companies.
The congressmen say this is to protect U.S. security and prevent foreign countries from collecting important American information.
Some U.S. transportation associations also support this bill.
Currently, the bill still needs more discussion and voting before it can become official law.
