The UK's holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds also increased, now about $858 billion.
China's holdings of U.S. Treasury bonds are about $756 billion, roughly the same as last month.
The U.S. Treasury Department also said that foreigners bought more long-term U.S. Treasury bonds.
Americans also bought some foreign long-term government bonds.
The U.S. Treasury Department will release new data in September.
