U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bennett said the U.S. has given Indian refineries a 30-day "temporary license" allowing them to buy Russian oil that is already at sea and cannot be returned.
The U.S. emphasized that this action will not allow the Russian government to receive too much money.
The U.S. reasoned that due to tensions near the Strait of Hormuz affecting global oil transportation, oil must continue to enter the market.
The U.S. also hopes India will buy more American oil in the future.
Previously, Trump warned that if India continued to buy large amounts of Russian oil, tariffs might be imposed on India.
To avoid trouble, India has indeed reduced some imports, but under pressure, India will also try to protect its own interests.
The U.S. now wants India to play a bigger role economically and geopolitically, especially in facing China, so it has temporarily relaxed sanctions to prevent greater difficulties for India.
