A Chinese researcher named Li Yunhai was accused in Texas, USA, of attempting to take cancer research data.
Li Yunhai works at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, mainly studying how to prevent breast cancer metastasis.
He downloaded a lot of research materials during work and stored them on a cloud service in China.
Later, when he was preparing to return to China, U.S. staff checked his luggage at the airport and found he was carrying sensitive medical information.
Li Yunhai is charged with theft of trade secrets and altering government records.
He has now surrendered his passport and posted bail.
According to Texas law, theft of trade secrets can result in two to ten years in prison and fines.
The case is still under investigation.
