There are reports that China is preparing to nominate public health official Song Li to run in the election for the next Director-General of the World Health Organization.
Song Li has worked in women’s and children’s health for more than 20 years and also has experience in international cooperation.
The term of the current Director-General, Tedros, will end in 2027, and under the rules, he cannot serve another term.
People from several countries have already announced their candidacies, and the new Director-General is expected to be chosen in May 2027.
After the United States withdrew from the World Health Organization, the organization lost a great deal of funding and began cutting programs, management positions, and staff.
China has already said it will increase its financial support.
Some people believe that China hopes to use this opportunity to play a larger role in international organizations. Others worry that, if a Chinese candidate is elected, they may give more weight to the views of the Chinese government.
However, these claims are still disputed, and China has not officially announced that Song Li will run.
The World Health Organization will later announce the full list of candidates.
