A blockchain analytics company said that North Korean hackers may have stolen about $6.36 billion from Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange.
Most of the funds were transferred within 20 minutes—four times the previous record.
Analysts believe the attack was very similar to previous cyber thefts linked to North Korea, although North Korea has consistently denied the accusations.
Binance said the hackers may have first gained access to a technician's computer and then issued withdrawal requests that appeared normal.
No important passwords have been found to have been stolen so far.
Binance said the affected funds were in the company's hot wallets, while most users' money is kept in cold wallets that are not connected to the internet.
The company will compensate users with its own funds and has already frozen about $3 billion in cooperation with its partners.
Binance temporarily suspended withdrawals and plans to resume them within 48 hours.
U.S. authorities are investigating.
After the news broke, the price of Bitcoin briefly fell to its lowest level in six weeks.
