Soon after a plane took off, it had an accident, which made the author think of a bigger question: why do many people think women are rare in the transportation industry?
Nowadays, many people are still surprised when they see a female driver, a female bus driver, or a female pilot.
Some people trust male drivers more and think men are better at driving, calmer, and better at handling technical problems.
But transportation work depends not on gender, but on training, experience, teamwork, and skill.
An airplane does not fly differently just because the pilot is a woman, and the same is true for buses and trucks.
What is even more unfair to women is this: if a man drives badly, people only say that he is personally not good enough; if a woman makes a mistake, some people start to doubt women in general.
In fact, many women are flying planes, driving buses and trucks every day, and helping cities keep running.
Real progress is when people do not find it strange to hear a female pilot’s voice, and understand that ability has never belonged to only one gender.
