India has many people who do not get enough to eat, but at the same time it wastes a huge amount of food, which makes the problem even worse.
A new UN report says that India is one of the countries with high methane emissions in the world.
When food rots in landfills, it releases methane, a gas that makes the Earth warmer.
As the weather gets hotter, crops are more easily affected by heat and floods, and food losses become greater too, creating a vicious cycle.
India wastes large amounts of fruit, vegetables, and other food every year, and the problem happens on farms, during transport, and in city life.
For example, farmers lack cold storage and refrigerated trucks, so much fresh food spoils before it can be sold; poor transport conditions also increase waste; and in cities, households and large gatherings often throw away a lot of food that is still edible.
To change this situation, India needs better cold-chain systems and storage, and it should also encourage restaurants and supermarkets to donate extra food, while turning food waste into energy.
This would not only reduce pollution, but also help more people get enough to eat.
