Two Chinese citizens in the U.S. are accused of gathering information about U.S. Navy bases and personnel for the Chinese government and attempting to recruit U.S. military personnel to assist them.
They were arrested in different states.
The U.S. government says these two individuals helped China's Ministry of State Security collect intelligence and were paid in cash.
The U.S. Department of Justice states that this case shows the Chinese government has been trying to obtain U.S. military secrets.
The FBI and Navy departments also participated in the investigation.
The indictment says these two Chinese nationals operated in various locations in the U.S., collecting information about new recruits and passing it to China.
If found guilty, they could face long prison sentences and heavy fines.
The Chinese government opposes the hype over the 'spy' issue and will protect the legal rights of Chinese citizens.
