Giving 'Unity' a New Meaning
qīn ài亲爱de的péng yǒu朋友 ，wǒ我xiǎo shí hòu小时候jiā rù加入le了běn dì本地de的jī dū jiào基督教qīng nián huì青年会 ，hòu lái后来yě也zài在quán guó全国gōng zuò工作 。
Dear friends, when I was young, I joined the local Christian Youth Association and later worked nationwide.
wǒ我qù去guò过sī lǐ lán kǎ斯里兰卡běi bù北部hé和dōng bù东部 ，nà lǐ那里yǒu有hěn很duō多tài mǐ ěr rén泰米尔人hé和mù sī lín穆斯林 。
I have been to the northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka, where many Tamils and Muslims live.
nà那shí hòu时候 ，běi bù北部yǒu有zhàn zhēng战争 ，wǒ men我们qù去nà lǐ那里yào要jīng guò经过hěn很duō多jiǎn chá检查 。
At that time, there was a war in the north, and we had to go through many checkpoints to get there.
wǒ men我们bāng zhù帮助guò过yīn wèi因为zhàn zhēng战争shī qù失去jiā yuán家园de的rén人 ，gěi给tā men他们jiàn建fáng zi房子 。
We helped people who lost their homes because of the war by building houses for them.
nà lǐ那里de的shēng huó生活hěn很kùn nán困难 ，wǎn shàng晚上méi yǒu没有diàn电 ，wǒ men我们yòng用méi yóu dēng煤油灯 。
Life there was very hard; there was no electricity at night, so we used kerosene lamps.
suī rán虽然yǒu有wēi xiǎn危险 ，dàn但wǒ我hěn很xǐ huān喜欢běi bù北部hé和dōng bù东部de的rén men人们 。
Although it was dangerous, I really liked the people in the north and east.
zhàn zhēng战争ràng让hěn很duō多rén人shòu shāng受伤 ，yǒu xiē有些rén人shī qù失去le了jiā rén家人hé和shēn tǐ身体de的yī bù fèn一部分 。
The war caused many injuries; some people lost family members and parts of their bodies.
wǒ我jué de觉得hé píng和平hěn很zhòng yào重要 ，bù不zhǐ shì只是méi yǒu没有zhàn zhēng战争 ，hái还yào要yǒu有gōng píng公平 。
I believe peace is very important, not just the absence of war but also fairness.
wǒ men我们bù tóng不同mín zú民族de的rén人yīng gāi应该hù xiāng互相lǐ jiě理解hé和zūn zhòng尊重 。
People of different ethnic groups should understand and respect each other.
zuì jìn最近 ，sī lǐ lán kǎ斯里兰卡fā shēng发生le了hóng shuǐ洪水hé和fēng bào风暴 ，hěn很duō多rén人shòu zāi受灾 。
Recently, Sri Lanka experienced floods and storms, and many people were affected.
dà jiā大家bù不fēn分mín zú民族hé和zōng jiào宗教 ，hù xiāng互相bāng zhù帮助 ，zhè这jiù shì就是tuán jié团结 。
Everyone helped each other regardless of ethnicity or religion; this is unity.
wǒ men我们yīng gāi应该yì qǐ一起nǔ lì努力 ，ràng让měi gè每个rén人dōu都néng能guò过shàng上gèng更hǎo好de的shēng huó生活 。
We should work together so that everyone can have a better life.
xī wàng希望wǒ men我们néng能yòng用zhè这cì次zāi nàn灾难 ，ràng让guó jiā国家biàn dé变得gèng更tuán jié团结 、gèng更hé píng和平 。
I hope we can use this disaster to make the country more united and peaceful.
