They don't want to go to war with China, so they will carefully 'take it slow' to avoid putting too much pressure on China at once, which might cause China to react strongly.
The US may reduce China's access to markets by negotiating trade deals with the EU, India, and others; it may also pressure some countries in energy matters to make it harder for China to obtain needed resources.
If Russia moves closer to China, it may make it easier for China to get resources; if the US can reach an agreement with Russia, it may be easier to continue 'containing' China without war.
